Additional Info

Hidden away in a little-known corner of the southern Rocky Mountains is a precious historic artifact of the American West that time forgot. Built in 1880 and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the twentieth century.

The C&TS is recognized around the world for its spectacular scenery and unspoiled vistas, as well as the historic rolling stock and railroad structures that are preserved on the line. Many of the buildings and railroad equipment date to the turn of the twentieth century or earlier, making the C&TS the best preserved steam era railroad in North America.

Owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico, the train crosses state borders 11 times, zigzagging along canyon walls, burrowing through two tunnels, and steaming over 137-foot Cascade Trestle. All trains steam along through deep forests of aspens and evergreens, across high plains filled with wildflowers, and through a rocky gorge of remarkable geologic formations. Deer, antelope, elk, fox, eagles and even bear are frequently spotted on this family friendly, off-the grid adventure.

The Cumbres & Toltec 2022 schedule operates from July 1st-October 23rd and features a mix of offerings, including:

· Full Excursion Trips travel by train the full line between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO and includes a 40-minute bus ride and lunch.

· Half Limited Trips travel half the C&TS line from either Chama, NM or Antonito, CO to the mid-way point of Osier Station and back. Lunch included.

· Short Express Options are perfect for families, people short on time, and people who want to “chase the train” as well as ride it.

Special Trips are trips that do not run weekly, including the monthly 168 Brunch Special, the 168 Dinner Special, the Geology Train and the annual Wildflower (Botany) Train.

Marvel at the beauty of the New Mexico - Colorado border as you travel in 19th century luxury, experiencing the West as it was in 1880.
