The Major Lunar Standstill (MLS) is a rare astronomical event that occurs every 18–19 years, when the Moon rises at its farthest points on the horizon. At Chimney Rock National Monument, the Moon dramatically rises between Companion Rock and Chimney Rock, a phenomenon the Ancient Puebloans likely built ceremonial sites to observe over a thousand years ago.
To celebrate this season’s MLS before it ends in 2025, one last special late-night event will be held at the Amphitheater near the Visitor Center. Programs include expert talks on astronomy, archaeology, and Native culture, Native American music, stargazing with telescopes, and a live-streamed view of the Moon rising between the pinnacles.
